Every February, the Dominican Republic transforms into a living canvas of color, rhythm and cultural pride as Carnival sweeps through cities and towns from coast to coast.

Far more than a street party, Dominican Carnival is a centuries-old tradition rooted in the country's rich blend of Taíno, African and European heritage.

While celebrations take place across the island, a handful of locations stand out for their spectacle. La Vega, considered the birthplace of Dominican Carnival, draws crowds every Sunday in February with elaborate parades featuring iconic characters such as the Diablo Cojuelo and Roba la Gallina, all adorned in handcrafted masks and extravagant costumes.

Santiago de los Caballeros brings its own elegance to the festivities, with neighbourhood clubs parading their signature Lechones characters through the streets. In the capital, Santo Domingo, a grand national parade along the Malecón on the last Sunday of February unites revellers from every corner of the country.

For visitors staying near Bávaro, Punta Cana offers its own carnival experience along the city's main boulevard, just 30 minutes from the resort strip.

Those who prefer to stay closer to their hotel can still enjoy the spirit of the season, as Princess Hotels Punta Cana hosts its own carnival-inspired celebrations tied to Dominican Independence Day on February 27, complete with themed entertainment, live music and a traditional Dominican buffet featuring sancocho, mangú and the beloved Dominican flag dish of rice, beans and meat.

What makes the Dominican Carnival truly unique is its depth of meaning.

Each character carries a story—a social critique, a legend or a piece of living folklore—set to the infectious rhythms of merengue and bachata. For travellers seeking an authentic cultural experience, there are few better windows into the Dominican soul.
