A recent studies shows Apple Pay and Google Pay now account for nearly one-third of all online spending in Canada.

According to new research from Global Payments, the trend could have implications for travel suppliers and advisors as consumers increasingly expect more payment flexibility when booking trips.

The report found that digital wallets represented 32% of Canadian e-commerce transaction value in 2025, making them the country's second most-used online payment method behind credit cards, which accounted for 46%.

The report forecasts that by 2030, digital wallets will increase their share of Canadian online spending to 37%, while credit cards are expected to decline to 42%.

The company said the findings underscore the importance for airlines, hotels, cruise lines, tour operators and travel advisors to offer a wider range of payment options as travellers increasingly use digital payment methods to book flights, accommodations, cruises and vacation packages online.

"Consumers expect greater choice and flexibility in how they pay," said Phil Hogg, Head of Canada Enterprise Business Development at Global Payments.

"The findings not only highlight the growing role digital wallets play in everyday commerce, but they also underscore the proliferation of payment options. Businesses that adapt to consumers' desire for a range of payment choices will be better positioned to serve their customers and support future growth."

The report also highlighted continued growth in Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) services. BNPL accounted for 5% of Canadian e-commerce transaction value in 2025 and is projected to grow by an average of 9% annually through 2030.

Globally, digital wallets have become the leading online payment method, representing 56% of e-commerce transaction value. Adoption is highest in the Asia-Pacific region, where digital wallets accounted for 77% of online spending in 2025.

Published annually by Global Payments, the report surveyed more than 63,000 consumers across 42 markets and includes forecasts for e-commerce and point-of-sale payment trends through 2030.
