The Government of Canada edited its travel advice page for the United States last week. While the advisory for visitors heading across the border remained at a green “take normal precautions” level, the “entry and exit” section of the page was expanded significantly, to encompass the new requirements for those staying for longer than 30 days.

The new edit includes the following wording, under the heading “Registration.”

“Canadians and other foreign nationals visiting the United States for periods longer than 30 days must be registered with the United States Government. Failure to comply with the registration requirement could result in penalties, fines, and misdemeanor prosecution. You should consult the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website to determine if you need to register with USCIS and how to do so. You can verify if you have been automatically registered on entry to the US by looking up your I-94 admission form on the U.S. Customs Border Protection (CBP) website.

The advice echoes updates the U.K. and Germany are giving to their citizens following the detention of travellers trying to enter the U.S. This is in addition to the warnings issued by Finland and Denmark for transgender travellers, indicating they should contact the embassy or consulate before travelling.
