Canadian and American border services announced that deadlines for NEXUS applicants’ interviews will be shortened as of April, 2027.
During the pandemic, applicants were granted up to five years to schedule their enrollment interview following a conditional approval for the NEXUS travel card. This was an extension from the original two-year deadline, introduced to account for delays the agencies encountered during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Now with more enrolment interview capacity available, the two-year deadline is returning,” the Canadian Border Security Agency said.
Applicants who have already received a conditional approval or receive it before April 1, 2027 must schedule their interview within five years of their approval date, or by April 1, 2029—whichever day comes first.
Conditional approvals received on or after April 1, 2027 will have two years from the conditional approval date to schedule the interview.
Anyone who is waiting for an interview is encouraged to make an appointment as soon as possible in order to avoid their application expiring.
According to CBSA, NEXUS is designed to expedite the border clearance process for "low-risk, approved travellers" who are crossing the border into Canada or the United States. At select ports of entry, members benefit from access to priority lanes, as well as TSA Precheck and Global Entry benefits. A NEXUS card is valid for five years.
To apply, travellers submit an online form and $120 USD non-refundable processing fee. Once conditionally approved, applicants must schedule an interview with both CBSA and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) before receiving their NEXUS card.
The CBSA portion of the NEXUS interview is conducted at a NEXUS enrolment center, while the U.S. CBP portion may be completed at a CBP enrolment center or through Enrolment on Arrival. Interviews include identity verification, fingerprinting, and questions from both CBSA and U.S. CBP officers.
