The eastern Pacific hurricane season has officially kicked off with the formation of Hurricane Barbara, now swirling off Mexico’s southwestern coastline.

According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC), Barbara reached hurricane strength early Monday and is currently located approximately 155 miles (245 km) southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico. With maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 km/h), the storm is moving northwest at 10 mph (17 km/h).

Although no coastal warnings or watches were in effect as of Monday morning, forecasters are urging caution.

Swells generated by the hurricane are expected to impact the coasts of Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima, and Jalisco over the next few days.

The NHC warns these swells could produce “life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.” Heavy rainfall is also forecast, with potential for localized flooding in some regions.

Meanwhile, a second storm, Tropical Storm Cosme, is gaining strength further out in the Pacific.

Located about 630 miles (1,015 km) south-southwest of the tip of Baja California, Cosme had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (80 km/h) as of early Monday. It was moving west-northwest at 9 mph (14 km/h) and is expected to approach near-hurricane strength before shifting direction toward the northeast midweek.

Travelers planning to visit Mexico’s Pacific coast are advised to monitor local advisories and weather updates closely.
