Severe winter weather is wreaking havoc on travel across Scotland.

According to reports, snow, ice, and freezing temperatures are causing widespread disruptions. Aberdeen International Airport announced that, due to “deteriorating, extreme weather conditions,” all flights would be suspended until 17:00 local time.

Meteorologists have issued a series of amber and yellow weather warnings across much of the country, with the Met Office forecasting ongoing snowfall, drifting ice, and potential blizzard conditions in northern and highland areas, The Scottish Sun reports.

Air Travel Impact

Flights across Scotland have been hit by cancellations and diversions at major airports, including Glasgow, Aberdeen, and Inverness. According to The Guardian, commercial carriers confirmed delays or temporary suspensions due to icy runways and low visibility, which create unsafe conditions.

A British Airways flight from London Heathrow to Aberdeen Airport was forced to divert to Edinburgh, more than 100 miles from its original destination. Aberdeen flights from Kirkwall, Sumburgh, Birmingham, Manchester, and Amsterdam were all cancelled Monday morning.

Rail and Road Disruptions

Rail operators are warning of service cancellations and delays, particularly on northern and rural lines. Network Rail Scotland routes between Aberdeen and Dundee, and between Inverness and Wick/Thurso, may be affected for several hours.

Road travel is equally treacherous. Police Scotland reported blocked roads and urged motorists to avoid non-essential travel. Emergency crews are working to clear major routes, but drifting snow and ice continue to make conditions hazardous.

Authorities are urging residents and visitors to closely monitor weather updates and travel advisories.

Advice for Travellers

  • Check flight statuses with airlines before departure.
  • Expect delays or cancellations on trains and buses, especially in northern regions.
  • Allow extra travel time and consider postponing non-essential trips.
  • Ensure vehicles are winter-ready and carry emergency supplies if travelling by road.
