A 7.7 magnitude earthquake shook Myanmar today, March 28, 2025, affecting bordering Thailand.
As a result, the Canadian government updated its travel advisory for both countries to include information about the seismic activity, under the heading “Natural Disasters and Climate.”
The advisory for Thailand reads:
“On March 28, 2025, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck central Myanmar, which has also affected Thailand. There are reports of infrastructure damage in Thailand.
There are reports of aftershocks above a magnitude of 6, and more could occur.
If you are in an affected area:
- monitor local media
- follow instructions from local authorities, including evacuation orders.”
The advisory for Myanmar also includes the instruction to seek shelter in a safe place, away from buildings and infrastructure. Myanmar was already under a “avoid all travel” order from the government “due to the risk of politically motivated violence and civil unrest.” The Canadian government advises any Canadian already in Myanmar to leave immediately if it is safe to do so.
Thailand is presently experiencing a tourism boom, linked in no small part to the “White Lotus Effect” which sees exploding popularity for the destinations where the HBO show is set.
