A Caribbean vacation in St. Maarten is lovely, but if your clients want to connect with the destination in a more meaningful way, there are voluntourism opportunities that allow them to do just that.
Pack for a Purpose may already be familiar to you. Visitors are asked to bring donations in their suitcases to help local organizations. The foundation operates worldwide. In St. Maarten, Divi Little Bay Beach Resort is the collection site for donations for two projects: The New Start for Children Foundation, a foster home for children in need, and SECDA, which supports daycare centers across the island. It’s a simple way to make a big impact during your stay. They are asking for school supplies, educational resources and sports equipment, among other essentials.
Another easy way to make a difference in St. Maarten is to turn an early morning walk on the beach into a turtle nest patrol. Volunteers with the Nature Foundation, Sint-Maarten, take shifts patrolling Simpson Bay, Mullet Bay, Guana Bay, Gibbs Bay, Oyster Bay and Dawn Beach. Noting nesting activity helps to safeguard turtle nests. Shifts are available weekday mornings from April to December.
If your clients want to make a difference keeping the environment pristine, they can spend some time at Perpetual Plastics. The organization is part of the EPIC (Environmental Protection in the Caribbean) Foundation and works to collect, recycle and reuse plastic waste. Volunteers are needed for a few hours at a time to help at their facility, or to join in community events, such as tree planting or clean-up events.
If clients are interested in volunteering during their time in St. Maarten, you can direct them to the Volunteer.sx site. It’s a handy spot to find opportunities that align with their skills and interests, and a nice way to connect with the people hosting them in their beautiful country.
