All Clear Travel Insurance dug into what makes a destination “grandparent-friendly” and identified the top 30 cities in the world for older adult travel. They looked at 175 cities around the world, assigning a score based on things that are important to the over-70 demographic, such as:

  • Walkability – total elevation changes in metres across the city, and the average elevation.
  • Crime and safety statistics.
  • Healthcare access and quality.
  • Levels of noise and light pollution.
  • Quality of green spaces.
  • Culture access – total number of attractions (e.g. museums and theatres) per square mile.
  • Mean annual temperature.
  • The percentage of accessible hotels.

Only one Canadian destination managed to break into the top-scoring spots: Vancouver.

At number 19, with an overall score of 59.3, All Clear ranked the West Coast city highly on accessible stays and walkability. The rainy city didn’t do too well on the climate comfort and peace and quiet scales, however.

The top spot, with an overall score of 74.2 went to Valencia, Spain. The survey cited "plenty of attractions, fresh sea air and stunning coastal views,” as well as  “Its flat cityscape, plethora of green spaces and balmy Mediterranean climate” as reasons for its high score.
