Sweater weather is driving a new travel trend. Google searches for “cold holidays” have surged 82% worldwide over the past quarter, with Reykjavik, Helsinki, and Tallinn topping the list of Europe’s chilliest capitals to visit this October, according to Omio.

The travel booking site checked the thermostat in every European capital to list which cities serve up the briskest autumn air for travellers craving a frosty escape:

Coldest European Capitals in October

  • Reykjavik, Iceland – 2°C
  • Tallinn, Estonia – 3°C
  • Helsinki, Finland – 4°C
  • Oslo, Norway – 4°C
  • Riga, Latvia – 4°C
  • Vilnius, Lithuania – 4°C
  • Warsaw, Poland – 4°C
  • Stockholm, Sweden – 6°C
  • Copenhagen, Denmark – 7°C
  • Prague, Czech Republic – 7°C

“October is a great time to visit Iceland, as it’s not yet quite as cold as the depths of winter, so you can take in all the breathtaking scenery it has to offer without the threat of extreme temperatures,” Omio noted.

Helsinki follows closely at 4°C, with Scandinavian cities like Stockholm and Oslo offering similarly brisk conditions. “Throughout Scandinavia, autumn and winter are all about practising the art of hygge, enjoying good food, good company and fostering the feeling of togetherness,” the report said.

Tallinn, with its cobblestone streets and tucked-away cafés, was singled out for its storybook charm. “Love rewatching Gilmore Girls when the weather starts to cool down? Tallinn in Estonia might be the autumnal city break for you,” Omio suggested.

In Eastern Europe, cities like Riga, Warsaw, and Prague pair cool temperatures with history, culture, and affordability. “Eastern Europe is renowned for its stunning architecture, rich history, and affordable prices, making it a top destination to visit in autumn."

Prague rounds out the top ten with average lows of 7°C, offering travellers a mix of “autumnal vibes, history and nightlife.”
