Tourism authorities in Riviera Maya are considering a new initiative that would promote sustainable tourism throughout Quintana Roo and Yucatan, called the Cenote Corridor.

The Cenote Corridor, according to Estefanía Hernández, Secretary of Playa del Carmen Municipal Tourism, would be an inter-destination campaign highlighting the region’s many cenotes, which are pools of freshwater that have formed from limestone caverns, sometimes located in caves but otherwise open to the air.

According to Riviera Maya News, the Cenote Corridor would include cenotes in Valladolid, Merida, Tulum, Puerto Morelos, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen and Felipe Carrillo Puerto.

The secretary is currently working with the Ministry of the Environment as well as environmental organizations like Urban Cenotes and Water Sentinels to make it happen. Each cenote listed will have to meet water quality standards and be managed sustainably and responsibly before becoming part of the new program.

The Cenote Corridor will be officially presented at the 2026 International Tourism Fair in Spain.
