Governor Mara Lezama this week announced that the Mexican Caribbean state of Quintana Roo is set to further strengthen its status as a global tourism hotspot with the addition of new hotel rooms.

Earlier this week, Lezama met with Mark Hoplamaizan, CEO and President of Hyatt Hotels Corporation, and Encarna Piñero, Executive Vice President and CEO of Grupo Piñero. During that meeting, the three reached a historic agreement that will enable the construction of new hotel rooms in Quintana Roo.

The meeting took place amid the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) being held in Madrid, Spain.

Governor Lezama described the new accord as a strategic alliance that will bolster the region's destinations, accounting for an increase of up to 30 percent in hotel reservations. This, she affirmed, will further elevate Quintana Roo’s status as an undisputed tourism leader on the international stage.

Governor Lezama emphasized during the meeting that this new pact reflects the state government’s dedication to strengthening international partnerships, and attracting investments to drive economic growth and prosperity in Quintana Roo.

The fresh collaboration with two leading global hotel chains underscores the state government’s ongoing commitment to fostering sustainable development, ensuring that tourism growth benefits the entire population, both socially and economically.

Lezama did not disclose specific locations or timelines for the construction of the new visitor accommodations.

Earlier this year, Spanish investors in Madrid also announced plans to build five additional hotels in the Mexican Caribbean state, which will contribute another 2,500 rooms to Quintana Roo’s current supply.

Editor's note: A previous report incorrectly stated the governor said it would be an increase of 25,000 rooms. That has been corrected. No total number of rooms has been given, according to Quintana Roo officials.
