Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) said this week that international visitation to the country increased by 12.3 percent in July, when compared to the same month in 2024.

“Of this amount, 4,245,420 (50.5 percent) were international tourists (travelers living abroad who stayed overnight in Mexico), 6.1 percent higher than in the same month a year earlier, and 4,159,973 (49.5 percent) were excursionists (visitors who did not stay overnight on their trip),” said a release from the organization.

Data for these studies comes from the International Tourism Survey (ETI) and the Border Traveller Survey (EVF), which provide information on international visitors residing abroad who visit the country (entries), and on residents of the country who visit abroad (departures), as well as their expenditures.

Tourism spending numbers were mostly positive, as well. INEGI reported that in July 2025, foreign exchange income related to total visitor spending amounted to 3 billion dollars: an increase of 10.2 percent at an annual rate.

The expenditure made by international tourists reached 2.7 billion dollars. Of this amount, 92 percent came from inbound tourists and 8 percent from border tourists. On average, July saw an expenditure per visitor of $357, 1.9 percent less at an annual rate.

Breaking down the expenditure per visitor by entry method, those who entered by air averaged a spend of $1,194, those who entered by land spent $359 and border tourists spent $121.
