"We wanted to share our beautiful hotels, restaurants and activities with the Canadian public," said Carol Shaughnessy, who has been in the region for 35 years.
Jerry Grymek, who has been in charge of the Keys for four years for the Toronto-based LMA Communications Inc., has admirably guided us through these five days.
"In the Keys, it feels a little outside the United States", he says. "There is a way of life halfway between that of the Caribbean islands and that of the American continent."
Our journey began in Key Largo, one of the first islands of the archipelago. We ate some great shrimp and fish tacos at Key Largo Conch House. We also got acquainted with the famous Key Lime Pie, a typical lime pie from the region and featured on the menus of just about every Keys restaurant.
We then slept at the very comfortable Hawks Cay Resort. This resort has recently undergone major renovations valued at US $50 million. This hotel, located on a peninsula, has 250 rooms of two and three beds and 177 apartments for rent. The hotel has added a new adult-only pool and a dolphin pool, with which it is possible to swim.
After taking the 46 bridges that connect the Keys, we finished our road trip to Key West, the most famous and most populous island of all.
We stayed at Margaritaville Key West Resort and Marina, a large resort located on the northwestern tip of the island. From my room, large and pleasant, I had a superb view of the sea and the cruise ships that dock at the dock.
The complex has shops, offers the opportunity to practice many water sports and admire the sunset on its long wooden dock. It stretches over 16,000 square feet.
We ended our journey admiring a splendid sunset aboard the catamaran of the company Land's End Sunset Sail.
