Drone Photographers Heading to Colombia, Take Note

Thinking of getting some dramatic overhead shots of Colombia’s lush jungles and sweeping valley views? Not so fast. New regulations regarding the use of drones in Colombia are now in effect, and any drone enthusiasts travelling there should be aware. 

At the start of the year, the National Directorate of Taxes and Customs (DIAN) in Colombia introduced regulations governing the import and use of drones. According to the announcement, these provisions seek to “strengthen national security against possible uses of these devices in criminal activities, such as indiscriminate attacks against law enforcement and the civilian population.”

If you are travelling with a drone, you will only be able to bring it in through two points of entry: Bogota El Dorado Airport (BOG) or the port of Cartagena (under the jurisdiction of the Cartagena Customs Sectional Directorate.) Attempting to bring a drone in at any other point will result in seizure.

You will also need to fill out paperwork, which the DIAN indicates will act as a “mechanism to strengthen risk management and improve customs control processes.” This form is available online (in Spanish) if you wish to complete it in advance, although Air Canada states that the completed form is not required for boarding or check-in. When you arrive in Bogota, Colombian customs agents will verify the information you provide.
