Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island, is a place of mystery, beauty and rich cultural heritage. This four-day itinerary will guide you through the island's most captivating sights and experiences, from ancient Moai statues to breathtaking landscapes and vibrant local culture.

Day 1: Explore Ancient History

Begin your journey in Hanga Roa, the island's main town. From here, head to the Ahu Vinapu sector, where you'll encounter ceremonial centers and the remains of the iconic Moai statues. These silent sentinels offer a glimpse into the island's fascinating past and the lives of the Rapa Nui's ancestors.

Next, embark on a guided trek to the Rano Kau volcano. At the volcano's edge lies Orongo, a small ceremonial village that once served as a fortress. This site played a crucial role in the Tangata Manu or "Bird Man" competition, an annual event that determined the island's leadership. As you explore Orongo, you'll learn about the significance of the Manutara seabird and how its nesting marked the beginning of this important ritual.

Day 2: Connect With Local Culture

On your second day, immerse yourself in the living culture of Rapa Nui. Take a guided trek or horseback ride to the Vai a Mei caves and the renowned Ahu Akivi. These excursions offer a unique perspective on how the Rapa Nui people connect with their environment through sights, smells, tastes, and sounds.

As evening falls, partake in local cuisine, and enjoy traditional music and art. Don't miss the chance to try your hand at Polynesian dancing. This immersive experience will deepen your appreciation for the vibrant culture that continues to thrive on the island.

Day 3: Beach and Ocean Adventures

Rapa Nui's crystal-clear waters beckon on your third day. While the island is famous for surfing, bodyboarding, snorkeling and Polynesian canoeing, today's highlight is an underwater adventure. Whether you're a seasoned diver or a first-timer, the island's professional diving centers can accommodate your experience level.

Dive into the warm, clear waters around Hanga Roa bay or the beautiful Anakena beach. As you explore the underwater world, you'll encounter a vibrant array of endemic marine life and flora. The excellent visibility and pleasant temperatures make this an unforgettable experience for divers of all levels.

Day 4: Sunrise and Archaeological Wonders

For your final day, rise early to witness one of the world's most spectacular sunrises. Make your way to Ahu Tongariki, where fifteen Moai stand sentinel on a volcanic stone platform. As the sun rises over the Pacific, you'll understand why this view is considered one of the most beautiful on the planet.

After the sunrise, embark on an archaeological tour with a local guide. This journey will take you through the island's most significant cultural and historical sites, offering deep insights into the ancestral heritage of Rapa Nui.

The best time to visit Rapa Nui is between October and December and April and June. While there is certainly still time to plan a last-minute fall adventure, find all you need to know about the region at Chile.travel.
