A recent update to Canada’s travel advisory for the United States—posted June 3, 2025—offers a timely reminder for Canadians to be well-prepared before crossing the border.

The Government of Canada is advising travellers to expect enhanced screening, particularly of electronic devices. Phones, laptops and tablets may be searched by U.S. border officials, who are not required to give a reason when asking for a password. If refused, your device could be seized, and you may face delays or even denial of entry.

To avoid complications, travellers are encouraged to switch devices to airplane mode and be ready to show travel details—such as the address of your stay, proof of ties to Canada (like employment or school), and evidence of a legitimate reason and duration for your visit.

There’s also a reminder about the U.S. Alien Registration Rule, which requires Canadians staying longer than 30 days to register online with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. This doesn’t apply to shorter visits.

Canadian officials stress that they cannot intervene if denied entry, so being organized and transparent is key.
