Canada and Greece have committed to strengthening their tourism ties.

According to a recent press release, officials signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in Athens to enhance cooperation and promote travel opportunities.

Olga Kefalogianni, Greece’s Minister of Tourism, and Karine Asselin, Canada’s Ambassador to Greece, signed the agreement, which focuses on institutional collaboration, data sharing, and sustainable tourism practices.

The goal is to create new opportunities for tourism growth and exchange best practices, particularly in climate action and economic sustainability.

"This MOU with Greece will strengthen bilateral trade ties with an important European partner and will serve to open up new opportunities for both countries in the tourism sector.

"By working together, we're making it easier for Canadians and Greeks to explore and enjoy each other's countries while supporting economic prosperity for both,” said Mary Ng, Canada’s Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development.

According to data from UN Tourism, Greece has long been a popular destination for Canadian travellers, ranking among the top ten European destinations for visitors from Canada.

In 2023 alone, Greek tourists spent approximately $6.9 million in Canada, a $2.1 million increase from the previous year.

With nearly 300,000 Canadians of Greek origin and many Canadians living, working, and studying in Greece, the partnership aims to deepen cultural and economic ties.

The agreement follows Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis's visit to Canada in 2024.

"The Government of Canada looks forward to a strengthened bilateral relationship with Greece and the opportunity to showcase its tourism sector to more international visitors, to the benefit of communities across the country."
