Royal Caribbean Group is celebrating the opening of a new cruise terminal in Seward, Alaska.

The company recently commemorated the opening of the Dale R. and Carol Ann Lindsey Alaska Railroad Terminal, alongside partners Alaska Railroad, The Seward Company and Turnagain Marine Construction.

The new terminal replaces dock facilities that date to the mid-1960. It’s now the largest cruise terminal in Alaska, located right next to the Alaska Railroad station with service to Anchorage, Fairbanks and other communities.

Built for year-round operations, the terminal features 41,500 square feet of enclosed space and 27,000 square feet of open, pass-through luggage transfer space. It’s also designed to serve other community needs, including recreational sports, concerts, festivals and gatherings in the cruise off-season.

The pier also has a new shore power system, developed through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Ports Grant. Any excess power generated during the winter months will be stored in battery systems, serving as a backup power grid for Seward during unpredictable winter weather.

"We know how important the terminal is not just to Seward, but to communities across Southcentral and Interior Alaska as these cross-gulf cruise guests take the opportunity to explore Alaska by land as well," says Bill O'Leary, president and chief executive officer of the Alaska Railroad, which owns and operates the Seward passenger dock and terminal.
