Princess Cruises Captain Dies Aboard Ship

Princess Cruises is mourning the death of a captain who died aboard one of its cruise ships after a medical emergency.

Michele Bartolomei, captain of Diamond Princess, died during a 19-night cruise around Japan, Korea, Taiwan and China.

The company delivered a letter to guests’ cabins to share the news and made announcements over the public address system. 

“It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of Captain Michele Bartolomei, who died onboard Diamond Princess earlier of a sudden medical emergency,” according to the letter, as reported by 9News Australia. “Our hearts are with Captain Bartolomei's family during this incredibly difficult time.”

It went on to add that the Italian captain was a “respected leader” with "decades of service at sea.”

Passengers were also informed that Captain Salvatore Macera had taken over command of the ship.
