MSC Group’s Cruise Division has officially broken ground on Sandy Cay, a new private island destination in the Bahamas scheduled to open in 2028. The luxury retreat will sit adjacent to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve and cater exclusively to guests sailing with MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys.

Announced earlier this year, Sandy Cay is designed to complement Ocean Cay with a more intimate, elevated experience focused on wellness, relaxation and the surrounding natural environment. The destination will feature five beaches, crystal-clear waters, dining venues, private retreats and spaces for guests to unwind.

Representatives from MSC Group’s Cruise Division, Bahamian government officials and project stakeholders attended the groundbreaking ceremony. Construction and site work are already underway ahead of the planned 2028 opening.

The new destination is part of MSC Group’s broader investment in its private island offerings in the Bahamas. While Sandy Cay will focus on a secluded, luxury-oriented experience, Ocean Cay is also slated for enhancements designed to expand its appeal to a wider range of cruise guests.

Planned upgrades to Ocean Cay include additional dining venues, new beach concepts for families and adults, expanded relaxation areas and immersive experiences that will give visitors more opportunities to engage with marine conservation.

Together, the two destinations will offer MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys guests distinct private island experiences, from family-friendly beach days and marine conservation activities to more secluded luxury escapes.

MSC Group has positioned environmental stewardship as a central part of its destination-development strategy, with both islands intended to emphasize the natural beauty of the Bahamas while connecting guests more closely with the ocean.
