At Fitur, the International Tourism Trade Fair taking place in Madrid, MSC Cruises confirmed it will launch year-round operations from La Romana beginning in November 2026.
The first time it has offered continuous, year-round sailings in the Southern Caribbean, The MSC Opera will operate a new weekly itinerary, with guests able to book either a seven-night cruise or a 14-night back-to-back “butterfly” sailing.
Bookings are already open, with the first departure scheduled for November 16, 2026.
One of the itinerary’s featured stops is Catalina Island, located off the coast of the Dominican Republic. The island is a protected nature reserve known for its white sand beaches and coral reefs.
MSC Cruises estimates the year-round deployment will bring approximately 120,000 international visitors to La Romana annually, translating to about 240,000 inbound and outbound airline passengers.
The company said the increase in traffic is expected to support hotels, restaurants, and other local businesses in the surrounding area.
“MSC Cruises first started calling in the Dominican Republic in 2014, so after more than ten years it is a proud moment for me to speak about our new homeporting offering in La Romana,” Gianni Onorato, MSC Cruises’ CEO, said.
“With year-round operations we extend the traditional season, bringing positive economic impact to the local community and bringing 120,000 additional international visitors to La Romana each year. MSC Cruises is committed to the Dominican Republic and this new program for the long-term.”
What it means for Canadian travellers
The year-round Southern Caribbean deployment adds another warm-weather option for Canadians, particularly during the winter travel season. La Romana is accessible via multiple international airports, with direct and one-stop flight options.
MSC Cruises will also offer its Fly&Cruise program for Canadian passengers, allowing flights and cruises to be booked together. The program includes coordinated flight and cruise arrangements, travel support, and the option to arrive up to three days before or depart up to three days after a sailing.
Departures are available from Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa, Québec City, Halifax, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and St. John’s.
