HAV Group and Havila Voyages have committed to creating a Norwegian coastal fleet that will be climate neutral, with the ambition of achieving zero emissions.

The plan will include Havila’s four current ships and future newbuilds.

The project was presented to politicians, journalists and others during Arendalsuka on August 14. Bent Martini, CEO of Havila Voyages, made the announcement. Arendaksula is an annual political and societal event in Arendal, Norway focused on debates, presentations and networking.

A test of the round-trip voyage of the Coastal Route Bergen - Kirkenes - Bergen route as soon as this fall using biogas and battery power. It’s a distance of over 5,000 nautical miles.

“If Norwegian authorities are serious about their environmental ambitions, the ships on the coastal route can be a beacon for the green transition in shipping and create synergies for other parts of the industry,” said Martini. “Technology exists, and the opportunities are there. It’s about the willingness to make the necessary investments. With strict environmental requirements from the authorities, those who want to operate the coastal route will be forced to deliver.”
