Carnival Cruise Line is using a new remotely operated robotic vehicle to keep its hull in ship-shape.
The technology, developed by Jotun, is being deployed on Carnival Pride. Called the HulkSkater, the tool inspects and proactively cleans the ship’s hull.
Unlike traditional cleaning methods, the system enables more frequent monitoring and maintenance, helping remove marine growth before it accumulates. Using advanced cameras and sensors, the system travels along the hull to assess conditions below the waterline while performing routine cleaning when needed.
"Maintaining a clean hull is essential for efficient ship operations, and the Hull Skating Solutions allows us to take a more proactive approach to hull maintenance," says Jari Oinas, assistant vice president of fuel performance and decarbonization at Carnival Cruise Line. "As we evaluate the technology aboard Carnival Pride, we see strong potential to support ship performance while advancing our long-term sustainability goals."
Marine growth on a vessel’s underwater surfaces can increase propulsion power demand by up to 25 to 30 percent, while propulsion represents approximately 60% of a cruise ship's total energy consumption. By proactively grooming the hull and reducing drag through the water, the HullSkater can help improve ship efficiency and contribute to lower fuel consumption and associated emissions.
Carnival Pride is currently piloting the technology. The Carnical team is collecting operational data and insights to assess how the system can support more efficient and sustainable operations moving forward.
