Canadian Government Updates Advice for Driving in Spain

Canadians are travelling to Europe in a big way. And while inexpensive airfares and an extensive rail system make public transportation a good option for many, sometimes the freedom and flexibility of a car is the best choice for a trip.

Global Affairs recently updated its travel advice for driving in Spain. Safety regulations now require cars in the country to carry specific equipment, punishable by on-the-spot fines if it is missing. The update does not change the risk level in Spain, which remains at yellow/exercise a high degree of caution due to the risk of terrorism.

Vehicles must be equipped with the following items in case of emergencies:

• A V16 emergency beacon and light, kept inside the glove compartment, that you must place on top of your vehicle in case of accident or breakdown.
• A reflective jacket, kept inside the car (not in the trunk), that you must wear when leaving a vehicle stranded or involved in a highway accident.
• A spare tire and a repair kit.
• A full set of spare light bulbs, plus the tools to change them.
• Snow chains if travelling in adverse winter conditions.

The advisory also reminds Canadians that they require a valid provincial driver’s license and an international driver’s permit for stays of up to six months. A local driver’s license must be obtained after six months.

Under the heading of safety and security, there is a warning about potential thievery on the road. Thieves may pose as someone with a flat tire or engine trouble, robbing anyone who stops to help. Conversely, they may stop to “help” a stranded motorist, then steal the vehicle and belongings. The warning states, “In the event of a road-related incident, be extremely cautious about accepting help from anyone other than a uniformed officer from the National Police Corps or Civil Guard.”

Travellers should also remain vigilant about the possibility of break-ins to their rental car, ensuring all luggage is out of sight and parking in secure lots.
