New sizing devices for carry-on luggage will soon start arriving at a WestJet counter near you. In a move the airline calls “relaxing” the carry-on requirements, cabin baggage allowances will shift from the present 21” x 15” x 9”, to 22” x 14” x 9”, meaning suitcases can be one inch taller (including wheels and handles), but must be one inch thinner than currently permitted on board.

The change takes effect May 6, 2025 and brings WestJet sizing into line with other airlines, including codeshare partner Delta Airlines. The 21” x 15” x 9 to 22” size allowance was unique to WestJet and had been the subject of feedback from guests and employees over the years.

“We expect this change will help streamline check-in and boarding times by eliminating the inconsistency between WestJet and several other carriers,” says Colleen Tynan, Vice President of Experience Management. “Introducing a new standard size ensures more bags fit on more flights, so we expect this to have a big impact on the overall experience on board.”

New WestJet baggage sizing devices will be delivered by March 13 to all airports where WestJet has service. To offer guests time to adjust to the new carry-on baggage dimensions, WestJet will continue to accept both the current and new maximum baggage sizing until the new maximum officially takes effect on May 6, 2025.
