WestJet has released a statement discussing its “difficult decision” to decommission its agent booking channel WestJet Agent effective October 24.
As described on its website, WestJet Agent was designed to “make it easier for you (travel advisors) to book with WestJet.” However, the channel is being shut down without an immediate replacement available.
"We know the recent announcement about the decommissioning of WestJet Agent has caused some confusion and speculation amongst the travel trade,” said Amanda Ierfino, WestJet Director of Sales.
“WestJet Agent is being retired due to technical reasons; however, it has always been our intention to implement an alternate booking option for our travel trade partners,” Ierfino added.
“Although there is no immediate replacement available, we are actively working on developing a new booking option and expect to have a tool in place by Q1 of 2024. We look forward to sharing more information with our trade partners in the coming weeks.”
The move will affect some agents more than others. Those advisors and agencies that have access to GDS for air only can still book and earn commission there. But those who were exclusively using WestJet agent will now have to book direct – with no compensation – or via an airline consolidator.
Ierfino says advisors have some other choices:
“Please note that this change does not impact any other booking platforms such as WestJet Biz, SIREV or any GDS. WestJet Vacations and WestJet Vacations Groups tools are not affected.”
Despite doubts from some advisors that WestJet will follow through with its pledge to launch an alternative to WestJet Agent, Ierfino says the airline continues to view agents as valued partners.
“We have always been committed to supporting and working alongside our travel trade partners, and that has not changed. Many teams at WestJet are working diligently on providing a solution that will meet the needs of our partners.”
