WestJet Hit with CTA Penalties

The Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) handed down monetary penalties to WestJet this month after the airline was found to be in contravention of the acts governing how passengers are treated.

In one instance, WestJet failed to follow its obligations when a March 2, 2024 flight to Palm Springs was cancelled. The CTA found that passengers weren't notified according to their preferences (including via means of accessible communication), and that passengers on the flight weren't reassigned to other flights departing within the 48-hour window they are bound to. Both of these infractions go against the Air Passengers Protection Regulations (APPR) and netted the airline a $146, 300.

In a separate instance, in Feb. 2024, WestJet refused to let a service dog board with its person, despite the request of a person with disabilities.   That's a contravention of the Accessible Transportation for Persons with Disabilities Regulations, an error that will incur WestJet a penalty of $50,000.
