3 (.5) Things You Likely Don't Know About Los Cabos

Los Cabos

1/4
You'd be forgiven if you think of Los Cabos only as a playground for the rich and famous, with stunning sunsets and a great party atmosphere. It's true, it has that. But as TravelPulse Canada is learning this week while we're there exploring the area and staying at the Hard Rock Los Cabos, there is much more to the peninsula.

First there are the facts. Los Cabos is located in the Baja California Peninsula and has a unique mix of desert and ocean, which makes for one of the most unique landscapes in the world. It's also the fastest growing region in Mexico, which says a lot, given the country already has so many things to offer.

We've got a jam packed few days exploring everything "the capes" have to offer - but here's a few things you might not know you can do in Los Cabos.

Camel Walk on The Beach

2/4
Camels in Los Cabos? Yes. Bet you didn't know there are more than one type of camel, and Cabo Adventures has two - the bactrian camel - which have two humps, and dromedary camels which have one. We learned far more about these odd-looking adorable creatures than we ever thought possible at Cabo Adventures. Once native to the area hundreds of years ago, most of the current camels in Los Cabos are rescues, the bulk of them from Texas. Animal tourism is a sensitive topic these days, and we were admittedly a bit hesitant to take part in this activity, but any concerns were lessened once we got the tour of their facilities and learned more about the nature of the camels.

Camels are workhorses, they get bored easily and like to have a job. Lugging tourists along on walks is a task they like, and the workers are sure to not overburden them, they have three days off a week, and even have a separate area to "chill" on their days off.

The ".5" part of this story? Cabo Adventures has an entire eco-farm that recycles plastics, water and ... camel poop, the latter of which it turns into paper that is then made into bookmarks. Guests learn the process and take home a complimentary bookmark (!)

ATV Adventure Through the Desert

3/4
Part of a Cabo Adventures package with the camels, is an ATV adventure through the desert. It's an adrenaline-pumping offroad circuit through cacti-studded mountain trails in the sand. It's a fun way to experience the desert while ending up back near the Pacific Ocean before a tequila tasting and buffet lunch.

Dine on a Floating Restaurant

4/4
A Los Cabos first - Animalon by the Sea is a floating restaurant by acclaimed Mexican chef Javier Plascencia. It does not disappoint in any way.

We did a condensed version of their 3-hour sunset dinner cruise that sails from Cabo San Lucas Marina, and sails through the Sea of Cortez that includes close views of the famous Arch, Lover's Beach and lots more. Water activities such as floating mats and paddling are available for those who want to take a dip or experience one of the nearby cove beaches. The boat is available for charters or would be an excellent option for romantic couples looking for an intimate experience - table capacity for general bookings is only 24 tables.

Agents are asked to book directly with Cabo Adventures and Animalon by the Sea for their guests at a commissionable rates.
