Colombia Travel Guide

Colombia is a South American country located on the northwestern coast of the continent. It borders Panama to the northwest, Venezuela to the east, Brazil to the southeast, and Ecuador and Peru to the south.

Colombia is a truly diverse and stunning country, rich in culture, history, and natural beauty. It is home to the Andes Mountains, the Amazon Rainforest, gorgeous Caribbean and Pacific coastlines, and colonial cities filled with vibrant street life, music, and dance. The country is famous for its coffee, emeralds, and national symbol, the Wax Palm tree.

Colombia has a well-developed public transportation system, with options including buses, taxis, and, in some cities, metro systems.

Buses are the most affordable and widely used form of transportation in Colombia. Several bus companies offer both local and long-distance services.

Taxis are widely available in cities and tourist areas. We found it easy to hail them down on the street but you can also call them in advance. They are also a convenient option for short trips.

In Colombia, a popular transport option is the "Chiva" bus. This colorful and musical bus is often used for parties and tours. In our opinion, these buses offer a fun and unique way to experience the country's culture and landscapes.

Important Things to Know

Currency

The local currency in Colombia is the Colombian peso (COP).

Tourists should carry cash in small denominations and only exchange money at authorized exchange offices and large hotels. ATMs are widely available in cities and tourist areas, and hotels, restaurants, and shops commonly accept credit cards.

Tipping is expected in Colombia, and it's customary to tip 10% in restaurants and for other services, such as taxi rides and hotel staff. Having some small bills on hand for tipping is a good idea.

National Languages

The official language of Colombia is Spanish, but many people speak English, particularly in the tourist industry.

However, learning a few basic Spanish phrases, such as "Hola" (hello), "Por favor" (please), and "Gracias" (thank you), can go a long way in endearing you to the local people and making your travels more enjoyable.

In addition to Spanish, over 80 indigenous languages are spoken in Colombia, including Kuna, Wayuu, and Arhuaco.

Climate And Weather

Colombia is near the equator and has a diverse climate, ranging from tropical along the coast to temperate in the Andes Mountains.

The country experiences two rainy seasons, the Atlantic and Pacific. The Atlantic season occurs from May to June, and the Pacific season from October to November.

The rest of the year is considered the dry season.

The best time to visit Colombia depends on what you want to see and do. For beach lovers, the Pacific coast is dry and sunny from December to April, making this an ideal time to visit for sun, sand, and water sports.

For those interested in exploring the Andes Mountains and visiting coffee plantations, the dry season from December to February is the best time to go. The views are clearer and the roads are drier during this time.
